Museum for Agriculture, Hungary

Europe’s largest agricultural museum is situated on Széchenyi-island in Budapest’s City Park (“Városliget”), in the Vajdahunyad Castle. Its designer, Ignác Alpár, unified various different architectural styles by using parts and more famous elements of the significant buildings of the day in the historical territory of Hungary. On the basis of the part of the palace visible from the lake, the people of the capital city gave the name “Vajdahunyad Castle” to the group of buildings. The building was originally constructed for the Millennium Exhibition, and later, in 1897, became home to the Museum of Agriculture set up the previous year.

With a surface area of 5200 m², this wonderful building provides visitors with some permanent exhibitions (animal husbandry, plant cultivation, gardening, antiquities, forestry, hunting, fishing, viniculture and wine making, and environmental protection), as well as periodical exhibitions. The Hungarian Museum of Agriculture also has exhibitions in the provinces, which are worth seeking out for the occasional trip, such as the Georgikon Farm Museum in Keszthely, the Ranch Museum in Lajosmizse and the Agricultural Country Museum in Cece.

We hold museum activities connected to individual exhibitions for nursery school and primary school students.
